Tilohri: Where Simplicity meets Elegance
Tilohri is a Noida based sustainable fashion label that believes in promoting sustainable lifestyle through fashion. The designs here are both timeless and contemporary. The fabrics they use are so comforting that it almost feels like a second skin. They dreamt of silhouettes to free the mind as they did the body. They envisioned clothing that would connect deeply, with all those who sought what the people behind Tilohri sought. This is because the fabrics are not only made with cotton but also dyed naturally focusing on the modern women of today.
Tilohri is founded by Nidhi Arora and later joined by Neharika Sethi. Neharika was in a full-time job whereas Nidhi was doing her own business when this idea of making their own brand came to their mind. The next year went into thorough research, full-fledged market study and making sure that they checked all the boxes before starting off with their own brand. A lot of revelations made their way before finally launching their own brand. It was a learning experience for them.
Tilohri came into existence when they felt the need to see garments that were thoughtfully made. Fibres that were unadulterated and normal, in their raw form and not altered with strains of artificial materials, textures that were woven with age-old abilities, hand-tailored with profound energy and understanding, proud of their individuality. They also wanted to bridge the gap between the weavers and consumers. They inculcated creativity and inclusivity of their own thereby making the pieces one of its kind. Tilohri created a fusion between crafts, like for a Kurta they made with Ajrakh, they also added Kutchi mirror work to that. Therefore, the pieces look very different and it showcases the sheer ideation which goes through before preparing every piece of cloth. Every twist of the spool, every stitch of the needle, and every single row of intricate weaves showcases sheer brilliance.
Not everyone is the same size and people find it really difficult to order from brands when they aren’t of a standard size. Tilohri helps bridge the gap between the same and it also has a personal touch for themselves. Many brands charge a premium to get the customisations done whereas Tilohri makes sure that you get all your customisations done without paying anything extra. This makes Tilohri very unique and affordable at the same time.
However, one of the primary challenges of this work is that it is nature dependent. The amount of sun decides the final colour of the fabric. Since natural dyes are used, there are no quick fixes. The tendency for the print to go wrong is also very high and as multiple processes are involved like boiling of water, washing in water, hand blocking and then drying the cloth in the sun, sometimes the process can get a bit too tenacious.
Tilohri calls themselves an all size store where the pricing for a small and the pricing for a 5XL dress is kept the same. Whenever we hear the word ‘beauty’, we have a stereotype in our minds, a definition of our own. When a fashion or clothing label is attached to it we always imagine beautiful, well-toned models showing off the dresses in their rather perfect bodies.
Breaking the stereotype, Nidhi believes that “Beauty comes in every shape and size”.
Tilohri is an undisputed expert in Western wear. They have literally aced the art of creating western dresses with Indian fabrics giving them a contemporary outlook. There is a whole range of western formals, skirts, reversible formal jackets, trousers and shirts. Their double-sided and reversible blouses have revolutionised the way people dress which again adds to their motto of sustainable and functional fashion.
One of their most celebrated collection is their Indo-western collection. The best part is that they can be restyled keeping the functionality quotient in mind. Double-sided blouses too is something which is very well appreciated by their customers. The finishing and the craftsmanship are done meticulously thereby giving their customers an experience of a lifetime and also leading to repeat customers.
Neharika says, “We are in times that we should value our mother nature so that even the upcoming generations are able to enjoy it. We don’t only believe in sustainable fashion but also a sustainable lifestyle. Therefore, we are able to extend sustainability into our work”
All the apparels that they make are sustainable. The packaging is also done in an eco-friendly manner thereby leading to no carbon footprint. The remaining fabrics are upcycled to produce scrunchies, masks, rakhis and seed paper notes. They also have tie-ups with NGOs where they contribute their bit to the society by creating regular work like making cloth bags for packaging, upcycling and training them to work and become independent.
In the past, especially during covid; when their work needed a different approach, work from home opportunities were also created inspite of it being so difficult to plan and create. The team at Tilohri feels that there is nothing that some brainstorming and grit cannot fix.
It really feels great to see a brand doing their bit for both the environment and society. I do cover many brands but after getting to speak with the founders and knowing about their work, I really feel very much attached to the brand.
“I feel that as a brand, a part of us is contributed to what we create. We need an amalgamation of Fashion and Comfort. People with extremely sensitive skin enjoy our fabrics. We have a few clients with eczema/psoriasis that literally just wear clothes from Tilohri. This is the level of comfort our clothes provide” says Nidhi.
The duo wanted to create a brand that is size-inclusive, sustainable, functional and something which revolutionised the way clothing is today. One thing you will notice in all their clothing is that there is a certain harmony of print and colour, a relaxed approach to structure and form, and an inclusive outlook towards shapes and sizes. Tilohri, in its very essence, belongs to all.
They also have a worldwide shipping facility and you can place your order from any part of the world. Once you place the order, it would take around 4–5 working days for your order to reach you.
I have linked the website so that you can go through their collection. I have also linked the social media handle so that you can keep yourself refreshed on the most recent contribution.
